On November 1, at 11 p.m., a mob led by Congress party workers burned alive Agya Kaur’s husband, Amar Singh, and father-in-law in Mangolpuri.1 Locals from the nearby housing block brandishing swords attacked Badhawa Singh, Amrit Kaur’s husband, and his body was thrown onto a hand cart. Her brother, Bhajan Singh, was forced to push the cart. After refusing, he too was attacked and thrown on the cart. Both injured Sikhs were burned alive.2
Rattan Singh was dragged out of his home by a group of locals, in front of his wife and children, and beaten to death. Soon after, the police arrived to take the dead body away. Rattan Singh’s wife, Gurmeet Kaur, pleaded with them later on in the day to release the body so she could organise the last rites, but they refused.3
Mohinder Kaur of Mangolpuri testified that a large crowd, including locals she recognised dragged out her husband, Joginder Singh and her two sons, Baldev Singh and Lakhbir Singh out of the house. One of the locals, from the same housing block stuck burning sticks into the mouth of one of the sons, but luckily survived, while his father was killed.4 Sardar Singh was killed in the presence of three policemen. His brother-in-law, Hakam Singh was also killed. Sardar Singh’s widow, Rajani Devi and her children managed to escape to Sultanpuri and testified that during the whole period, 400 Sikhs had been killed in the Sultanpuri area.5
