Presenter (BBC): “You’ve heard what Khushwant Singh had to say. Do you think revenge is being taken on the entire Sikh nation? Or is there a hooligan element involved?

Indian political commentator: It’s both, It’s also the result of the troubles and bloodshed in the Punjab.

Presenter: This is now Rajiv Gandhi’s problem. Can he solve it, considering his inexperience?

Indian political commentator: It will depend on the people he chooses for his administration, what political help he gets, his rapport with the opposition, and his relations with the states. The opposition should not be considered enemies. If there is an opposition government, it should not be considered anti-national. There should be a balance between the states and the centre. The Sikh problem was a political problem in the Punjab. It became a religious movement because the government mishandled it. It is now up to Rajiv Gandhi, the opposition leaders and also the Akali Dal to start the political process and to establish law and order. The relationship between Sikhs and Hindus is a close one. They inter-marry and their religion is more or less the same, in the temples and gurdwaras. The problem can be solved whether it’s Rajiv Gandhi or someone else after the elections.

Khushwant Singh: Indiraji’s term as Prime Minister had two eras. The first, before Sanjay’s death, brought prosperity. India became a nuclear power and joined the space club. In the second era, after Sanjay’s death she looked the same but became indecisive. She didn’t have very good advisors. She didn’t seem to have the power to solve the Punjab issue. I’m certain that if she had lived, she would have lost the election.

Presenter: Mrs Gandhi was once asked what would happen to India after her death and her reply was, ‘India will always have the strength to stand on its own feet’.

सी तजुर्बे के साथ इस problem को हल कर सकेंगे? यह depend करेगा कि

वो administration में कैसे आदमियों को बढ़ौती देते हैं, politics में कैसे आदमियों

की मदद लेते हैं, opposition के साथ कैसी rapported प्राप्त करते हैं कि after

all opposition में बड़े stalwarts हैं. Opposition को अगर enemy ना समझा जाए

फिर यह depend करेगा कि आप state के साथ कैसा relation रखते हैं. कोई

भी opposition की government अगर central की बजाय state में आ जाए तो central

party को उसको anti national नहीं समझना चाहिए conditioning tegration नहीं हो रही

है तो उसको अगर साथ लेकर चलेगा एक balanced state और federal उनका जसिखों

की आपके problem आई है. यह तो political problem थी Punjab में और उसके

बाद जो है उसको अगर religious बनाया गया या सिख community का बना दिया

गया problem यह तो यह था कि राजीव इस movement को अच्छी तरीके से

government ने handle नहीं किया इसलिए वन गई है. तो अब राजीव गांधी के

ऊपर है दूसरे नेताओं के ऊपर हैं खासकर के opposition के leader जो हैं

अकाली दल के भी leader उसमें शामिल हैं कि भई उनसे कितनी जल्दी political

process शुरू किया जाए law and order को जो है हाथ में किया जाए

आखिर सिखों और हिंदुओं का जो नेता है जो रिश्ता है वो तो वही

चोली दामन का रिश्ता है एक दूसरे के साथ शादियों में एहतियात होते हैं.

एक ही religion है गुरूद्वारों में temples में सारे जाते हैं. तो अगर वो

कर पाएगा तो मुझे उम्मीद है कि राजीव गांधी रहे या election के बाद

कोई आए कि ये मामला हल हो सकता है और खुशवंत सिंह ने अपने

इस छोटे

से interview में कुछ बातें Missus गांधी के आखिरी दिनों के बारे में भी

कही गई.

इंदिरा जी का यह सोलह साल prime minister जिसमें से तीन साल वो बाहर

गई एक युग तो वो है जो संजय की मौत से पहले, उसमें उन्होंने

बहुत कुछ किया. मुल्क को बहुत तरक्की, बढ़ावा दिया हम nuclear power वन गए

space जो आपके beach member बने. संजय की मौत के बाद या हाल वह

जो तो बाहर से तो वैसी की वैसी मालूम होती थी. मजूर उनमें वह

चीज़ थी जैसे कि decisive नहीं हो जाती. उनके वह फ़ैसला नहीं कर पाती

और अपने जो उनको advice जो बनाए थे जो खास बड़े पाए थे आदमी

उनकी सलाह लेती रही और यह जो खास करके Punjab में जो Punjab का

वह हल नहीं करता. उससे मालूम होता है कि उनके पास अब ताकत नहीं.

मुझे यकीन है कि अगर वह ज़िंदा रहती और अब election में जाती मुझे

यकीन है कि वह हार जाती है.

Missus गाँधी से एक बार पुछा गया था के आपका देहांत हो जाता है

तो हिंदुस्तान का क्या बनेगा? उन्होंने जब आपने कहा था कि हिंदुस्तान में हमेशा

अपने पैरों पर खड़े रहने की शक्ति है.
