Twenty-five-year-old Pyar Kaur of Ashok Nagar stated that at about 9am on November 1, a mob of two to three thousand men, including locals, attacked six members of her family, including her husband Gurbachan Singh, father-in-law, Uttam Singh, who was 60 years of age; Saudagar Singh, aged 25 years; Rani, wife of Saudagar Singh, aged 23 years; her sister-in-law (husband’s sister) Rani, 16 years of age who had been married; and her brother-in-law (husband’s younger brother) Jagir Singh, aged 18 years. All were beaten before being set alight and burned.1
