It was a strong mob numbering 3000-4000 that attacked Gurdwara Singh Sabha at Pul Bangash, led by locals of the area. One Sikh, Thakur Singh came out of the Gurdwara with folded hands to pacify the mob. A truck tyre was put on him from a neighbouring tyre shop. Kerosene oil was added into the tyre and set on fire. A few moments later, another group brought two badly wounded Sikhs in a wooden trolley. Their names were Gurcharan Singh of Tilak Nagar and Badal Singh who performed Kirtan at the Gurdwara. Both were thrown on a makeshift bonfire along with Thakur Singh. In no time, all three were reduced to ashes. Two jeeps full of police watched and incited the mob to violence.1
Surinder Singh who was Head Granthi of Gurdwara Moti Bagh witnessed local Congress MP, Jagdish Tytler leading the mob and inciting them to burn the Gurdwara and kill the Sikhs. Slogans like “Khoon Ka Badla Khoon Se Lenge, Sardar Gaddar Hair, Mar Do, Jala Do (We will take blood for blood, Sikhs are traitors, kill them, burn them)”. Five to Six policeman were also amongst the mob.2
