Ken Rees, ITN reporting from New Delhi
“Possible to reach the country area’s worst hit by inter community violence. We saw hundreds of paramilitary police patrolling the streets. And in this community, a full company of 150 soldiers was on duty. Their equipment included light tanks.
Despite this display of military strength, the major in charge insisted that all was now normal. Just normal. Situation normal? Absolutely and very fast returning to normal.
But the villagers told us of widespread rioting and killing and of hatred between Hindus and Sikhs.
I don’t like to see any Sikh people here.

So Sikh people were killed?
Yeah.
How many?
About 100, 200.
A mob had run down this street, bursting into Sikh houses, spraying them with blazing petrol and often cutting the long hair from the heads of their Sikh victims. Gruesome evidence in the rubble of their houses.”
Ken Rees reporting from New Delhi as the killings of Sikhs reaches a fifth day.
