Affidavit submitted before Misra Commission (1987).
I, Amarjit Kaur W/o Late S. Tirath Singh, R/o Uttam Nagar, Village Bindapur, Partap Garden, B-98, New Delhi, present address H.No.469, Gali No.8, Rani Bazar, Sharifpura, Amritsar, do hereby solemnly affirm and declare as under: –
1. That my husband died in November 84, riots. I am rarely able to support my children by tailoring and cutting. Previously, my husband had embroidery shop in Delhi.
2. That we were attacked by the mob three times. On 1st and 2nd November, we were saved with the help of Hindu relatives. Not even a single Hindu neighbours came to our rescue. On 3rd November`84, early morning, we were asked by the relatives to vacate their house. We were also disarmed by them. Traditional weapons in our possession like Swords and Khanda and Shield were taken away and promised help in case the problem arises. At 9 am the same morning i.e. the 3rd November, when mob attacked us, even our relatives did not turn up for help.
3. Shri Tilak Raj, President of Mohalla Committee, Partap Garden, knew in advance about the attack, came to our house and told us to vacate the house for safety. Laterally we were pushed out of our own house. When we had moved few yards from our house, we were attacked ruthlessly by the mob within a span of 15 minutes, three male members of our family were killed namely S. Tirath Singh, aged 42 yrs., S. Raghbir Singh, aged 30 yrs., and S. Joginder Singh, aged 18 yrs.
4. That meeting was held in mohalla but details not known, probably Tilak Raj, Ramesh and Paras Ram from our colony were involved.
5. That people from adjacent colony in a mob of around 300 persons came to attack Sikhs, guided by local persons with heavy iron rods with a big iron bulb on its top.
6. That we had no arms for self defence because we were already disarmed earlier. Police was not even seen around and we had no means to contact nearby police station. Not event a single Hindu neighbours came to our help.
7. That Gurdwara Uttam Nagar was seriously burnt even Holly Guru Granth Sahib was brutally burnt and torn etc.
8. That our people were first beaten with rods on heads, when half dead then they put kerosene on them and brunt them. We even did not get dead bodies to perform last rights.
9. That other Sikh people killed in my knowledge are Billa and Mohan Singh, adjacent to our house.
10. That three male persons died and cash worth Rs.15,000/- was looted.
11. That Mohalla committee including Tilak Raj, Ramesh, Daulat Ram, Paras Ram, Hans Raj, threatened to kill us, a month earlier.
12. That the mob shouted slogans like, “Sardar Ko Pakro Maro, Khatam Kar Do, Khoon Ka Badla Khoon Se Lenge.”
13. That I was recognize the culprits by face. We took shelter in Rajinder Nagar in my sister in law’s house. The police did not turn up for help.
