Affidavit submitted before Misra Commission (1987).

Affidavit of Surjeet Kaur wife of S. Suran Singh, aged 45 years, resident of House No.S-50, School Block, Shakarpur, Delhi.

I, the deponent above named do hereby solemnly state on oath as under: –

1.                  On November 1, 1984, in the morning we came to know about the assassination of Indira Gandhi. Quietly, in a gloomy mood, we remained sitting our house. We heard some commotion at noon time. We remained sitting inside our house after bolting our doors.

2.                  On 2-11-84, we were at our house. My husband’s younger brother named Salwinder Singh resident of Village Moked, Gurdaspur and my borther-in-law (husband’s sister’s husband) Jagtar Singh resident of village Badaala Distt. Amritsar had also came to our house to extend us an invitation of marriage.

3.                  On that day at about 3 PM, suddenly I saw a mob coming towards our house. At that time my husband was not at home. He was out of Delhi. We could not guess as to why the mob was coming towards our house. We got scared. Our neighbours advised us to go inside the house. We went inside. In no time the mob arrived at our house. They stopped in front of our house. Our neighbour asked us not to worry and bring our men out. I brought my children out. These were small kids, three boys and three girls. On seeing them, they turned back. When they were going back some people who were watching from roofs in front of our house asked the people in the mob that they should go inside the house and see the sofa bed where beddings have been kept. The mob came inside our house. The persons who came in our house had long knives in their hands. Some people had asked swords in their hands. The man leading the mob was Gupta Choley wala of Lado House. I know him.

4.                  Some men in the mob who came in pulled and dragged the sofa bed out of our room with the help of wires. They opened the sofa bed, dragged out Salvinder Singh and Jagtar Singh and beat both of them mercilessly. At that time we were in the house and the cries for help were coming from outside.

5.                  After that some men in the mob took kerosene oil from our house, locked the injured men into sofa bed and set the same on fire. Thus Salvinder Singh and Jagtar were roasted alive.

6.                  After that they looted our household belongings. Some goods were burnt also. In all I suffered a loss of Rs.35 to 40 thousand of rupees.

7.                  In this episode, our neighbours Tyagi who is an employee in the Sanitary Department, Ranbira (brother of Simmal Sahib) and one more neighbour whose name I do not know greatly helped us. They tried their best to save us. My husband returned on eleventh of the month.
