Affidavit submitted before Misra Commission (1987).

I, Prem Kaur wife of S. Baldev Singh aged 35 years resident of B-958/8, Ashok Nagar, Mandoli Road, Shahdara, Delhi, presently residing at C-114B, Tilak Vihar, DDA Flats, Delhi-18, do hereby solemnly state on oath that: –

1.                  On 31.10.84 when we heard about the death of our Prime Minister we were highly grieved and my husband came home after closing his shop. Nothing untoward happened in our colony on that day.

2.                  On 1.11.84, when my husband wanted to go out, two policemen met him and advised that he should go back his house because Sikhs were being killed outside. Upon this, my husband returned home. Then at about 3 PM a mob comprising of 2 –3 thousand men came in our colony. They were having iron rods, lathis, swords and some white powder with them. Our mohalla people told them that ours was the house of Sikhs. When mob came to our house we ran to our neighbour’s house. The mob burnt our house and started searching for us. Somebody told the mob that we were hiding in Kantilal’s house. Then the mob came to Kantilal’s house and asked him to turn-out the Sikhs hiding in his house otherwise they would kill him. But Kantilal told them that there was no Sardar in his house and that they should go away from there. But the mob did not go away. They stood there searching for us.

3.                  Then Kantilal, after cutting the hair of my husband and son, turned them out of his house at about 6 O’clock. He asked them to go somewhere else because the men in the mob had come to know that they were hiding there. From there we went to our factory at Chhajju Gate. There our factory had been burnt. From there we went to Ram Nagar, Tyagi Colony in the house of my brother Sarabjeet Singh.

4.                  On 2.11.84, when we were in the Tyagi Colony, some persons of Ashok Nagar came and in association with the people of Tyagi Nagar, murdered my husband and son Kuldip Singh, aged 17. The mob hit my husband on head with an iron rod and in the abdomen with a sword. He fell down. They burnt alive my husband and son. I hand folded begged the mob to spare them but they did not. They pushed me aside. Afterwards when they started beating me and surviving children we fled towards Shahdara Station and remained there for the night. I know many persons in the mob. They were: –

                                i.            Shanti Devi

ii.            Dinesh Kumar son of Shanti Devi
