Affidavit submitted before Misra Commission (1987).
I, Pirbi Bai W/o Mirchu Singh, r/o 32, Jhuggi Trilokpuri, at present residing at Farash Bazar Camp, New Delhi, do hereby solemnly affirm and state as under: –
1. I was alone at home on the 1st November, 1984. My husband Mirchu Singh, my son Hakam Singh and my younger brother in law Pratap Singh were in the letters house, which is opposite our jhuggi and is a pakka house in Block 32. First Ismail Khan and his wife Shammu Begum, came to my house and demanded to know where my husband was I told them I did not know. They stay in Block 34, Trilokpuri and were very friendly with their immediate neighbours who are also Sardars. They then went to my brother in laws house, my brother-in-law was on the roof of his house. I could see everything from my jhuggi. Ismail Khan alongwith the crowd, went to the roof, stabbed Pratap Singh with a knife and then threw him from the roof. He then turned to Hakam Singh and threw him off roof stabbing him. They then burnt his body in the park outside. Ismail Khan caught my husband Mirchu Singh and took him into 2 lanes away from he main road and killed him.
2. From my jhuggi, I could see. Sita Ram Mistry, telling the people to go and kill all the Sardars in the block and his Nephew was actually killing the Sikhs, but Sita Ram himself was not killing. They live in a jhuggi in 32 Block. About a month ago Sita Ram had said that he was standing for elections from the Congress (I) party and that we should all vote for him, because he would give us ration cards. Though I fell at the feet of Sita Ram and Ismail Khan, they refused to listen, kicked me aside and said they would hurt me if I continued this ‘nonsense’.
3. Another person I could see killing people in the mob was Ram Deo – formerly known as Ganga Saran. He used to own a house at 30/82, Trilokpuri, but sold it and now has a jhuggi at 32 Block. He is a purabiya and sells cups and plates to the jhuggi dwellers. He was using an iron rod to kill people. The 4th person I could see was Niyamat Ali of 33 Block. He is the Pradhan of 33 Block and makes the ration cards for the jhuggi dwellers. I could hear him saying, ‘I will kill the Sikhs’. Ayub Khan of Block 32 jhuggi whom I knows who works as a brick washer, later brought about 10 ladies to my house, after their husbands had been killed. My daughter-in-law, Shiela wife of Hakam Singh and Somat Bai wife of Pratap Singh, who were brought to my house. One of the ladies Shanti Devi, wife of Anu Singh who lives next to us in 32 jhuggi was raped by Gujjar – whom I can recognize but whose name I do not know. All the women, whose husbands were killed taken to Chilla Village. One of them who did this and raped the women was Kanak Singh Bhangi of block 33. There were lot of other Bhangies who would shine torches on the faces of these women, and then drag away the ones they liked and rape them. During all this the policemen standing on the road did not stop anything rather encouraged the mob. Before the actual killing, they first cut electric wires. Some people were killed with live wire current. For 3 entire days I roamed from house to house and on the 3rd of November when the Army finally came, I personally took them to each house where some one had been killed and showed them the houses where the killers and murderers were living. At 3 PM on the 3rd November, 1984, we were taken by buses to the Farash Bazar Camp.
