Affidavit submitted before Misra Commission (1987).

I, Harbhajan Kaur W/o Bakhshish Singh, aged 23 yrs., R/o 30/192, Trilokpuri, Delhi-91, presently residing at C-64A, Tilak Vihar, New Delhi-18, do hereby solemnly affirm and state as under: –

1.                  That my family consist of myself, husband (Late S. Bakhshish Singh) (who was a scooter rickshaw driver), Paramjit Kaur – daughter aged 3 yrs. My husband’s cousin “Gudoo” 25 yrs. who was staying at my house at that time, otherwise he used to stay at Bharatpur.

2.                  That on the evening of 31st October, Jagdish a Hindu driver, who lived in the street behind ours came and told us not to go out and stay indoors because mobs were pulling out Sikh men and beating them up.

3.                  On the morning of the 1st November 1984, we locked our house and went to hide in my husband’s aunt’s house – opposite ours Block 30/175. During the day, a mob of about 300 (all youths) kept roaming the streets. They were people from the locality as well as Jamadars from 27 Block Trilokpuri and Chilla Village. I recognized Ashok a young man of around 21 yrs., a Jamadar Bablu, Satpal, A muslim tailor from the gali behind. They carried lathis, Sariyas, tins of kerosene oil. They were shouting “Kahan Chhupe Ho Sardaro? Bahar Niklo. Ham Tumhe Khalistan Dikhate Hain. Hamari Ma Ko Mara Hain, Ham Tumhe Nahi Chhorenge.”

4.                  On the 2nd  of November,1984 in the afternoon, I covered my husband, brother-in-law and two other male relatives with chadars and hid them in the back yard of our house, locked the door.  At about 1-30 PM  the mob returned the same people as before carrying with them Sariyas, lathis, kerosene oil and white powder.  They broke open the door of 30/175 and dragged women out. Some one from the mob shouted “is ghar main nahi hai, us ghar me hai sardar:, pointing towards my own house.  Then Ashok hit me on my back and said “Kahan hai aapke devar? Batao, Isko bhi saath meim le chalo”.  They then banged my door and tried to break it open.  My husband opened the door and said “Hum to Hindu Hme chhore do”.  But they pushed their way inside and dragged the others out by their feet and hair.  They broke open their heads with Sariya, broke a cot from my house and burnt them alive near the nallah.

5.                  My husband ran and hid in the barsati of another Sikh’s house nearby.  The mob went there and made a hole in the wall and threw in burning logs and sticks.  The room caught fire and my husband (the neighbour husband) was burnt alive there.  On the 2nd November as the two men were burning I waved down a huge truck full of policemen for help, but they refused to help and drove off from there.  The policemen used to tell the Sikhs to go into their houses and then used to tell and direct the mob “Jaao un par hamala Karo”.

6.                  My husband’s uncle was hit on the head by bricks and lathis and they were about to burn him when Jagdish threw his arms around him and managed to save him.  Then they said, “Chalo ab inko kiyon maar dalna hai.  Inke ek he bete ko jala diya hei hamane, ab samajho to khud mar hi gaya hai.  Sardaro ne hamari maa ko maara hai.”

7.                  They looted everything from our house.  We spent the night of November 2nd at house, after the neighbours refused to let us spend the night at their houses. They blocked the entrances to their houses with Charpai’s and told us “apnay gharo mein chale jaao, hame bhi marvoago kya?  Chalo jaao yaha se” and pushed us away. Throughout the night we heard loud screams of victims being killed and the goondas were beating lathis against cansister of kerosene oil and yelling “batao kahan sardar chhupe he”.
